There is a number by the legendary Bob Dylan – “Times they are a changing…“. The message is if you don’t keep up with the times you will perish. The lyrics are ageless, relevant at all times, more so now.
The biggest game changer in the last 15 years has been technology. Companies which have embraced technology to their advantage are the ones leading the pack. In the 9 years since Apple launched its 1st iPhone importance of smartphones has grown manifold so much so that its influence on the consumer now exceeds that of the Web. It is now unthinkable for any company – big or small to not have a mobile presence. The best companies are now investing significantly in engaging their customers through their smartphones. Why? Consider the following:
“A whopping 51 million people in urban India were using smartphones in 2013—outpacing our initial estimate of 45 million—up from 27 million in 2012. A 89 percent growth year-on-year” – Nielsen, January 2014
The following graphic from the 2012 Nielsen report gives insight into smartphone usage patterns. In all likelihood these insights are as relevant in 2015 as they were in 2012. The key insights to take away for any company are the following:
- People with smartphones spend just over 25% of their time calling or messaging. The rest is spent on browsing, social sites and apps.
- Younger men spend 50% more time on browsing & entertainment than older ones.
- And women spend a lot more time on social sites.
(this beautiful graphic is not done by me. I give due credit to whoever produced this!!)
Every smartphone user spends about 100 mins daily playing with his phone – browsing, using apps or entertaining himself. Add to this the fact that these users are growing at an astounding rate of 89% YoY and the verdict is clear as crystal – Get on the mobile now! For the times they have changed.
Else, the “first one now will later be last for the times they are a changing..”. Signing-off with these immortal Dylan lines. Until my next post, ciao.
